Every Penny Counts Then and Now

An entry in the Secretary’s Minutes of a 1936 Fairfax Grange Meeting.

Every Penny Counts Then and Now

Let’s travel back to 1936. That year the Fairfax Grange members, with no Grange Hall to call their own, met at the Magunden Community Hall. Their commitment to the Grange’s future was both humble and profound, as demonstrated by the ‘penny march.’ Penny Marches became popular in the early 1930s. In the midst of the Great Depression, raising funds was hard. At the end of a church service, or in our case, a Grange Meeting, the basket was passed and change from pockets collected. While it was only a modest 62 cents, they proved that when a community comes together, every small contribution lays a brick in the foundation of something greater.

Every Penny Counts Then and Now

The Magunden Community Hall was at Fairfax and Edison Highway in 1936.

Fast forward 87 years, and the Grange still stands as a beacon for fellowship and celebration. We are the stewards of a legacy that began with spare change and grew to become a cornerstone of our community. Now, as we renew our hall, we invite you to join this tradition of change – not just the monetary kind, but the change that brings us together for music, dance, and the joy of shared experiences.

Your support, whether through membership, a helping hand, or a few pennies for the cause, is a thread in the vibrant tapestry of our Grange’s history. For only $40 a year, you can be part of the positive transformation that keeps our doors open to dances, gatherings, and the sound of laughter within walls that have seen the passage of time.

Join us in making history. Help us refurbish and care for the Grange Hall, building our treasury and ensuring that the tradition of live music and dance continues to resonate through our community. Be a part of the penny march of today – a march towards a future as rich and enduring as our past.

There’s a place for you here.

Plan a celebration, find your next dance, or become part of the Grange.
